Genuinely yes — with a clear-eyed view of the weather. Amsterdam in December is cold, damp, and dark by mid-afternoon. It's also one of the most atmospheric cities in Europe in winter: gas lamp reflections on the canals, brown café windows fogged from mulled wine, and the Amsterdam Light Festival turning the entire city into an outdoor art gallery after dark.
The tourist crowds that make summer feel overwhelming are largely gone. Museums have space. Canal boats move at a pace that lets you actually look at things. The Light Festival draws visitors, but they come in the evening rather than blocking every pavement all day.
Pack properly for the cold and the rain, book the Light Festival boat tour and your hotel well ahead, and December will be one of your best Amsterdam trips.

The installations are large-scale, genuinely beautiful, and designed for the city's water and architecture in ways that wouldn't work anywhere else. Boats drift beneath glowing archways, light reflects in the canal water, and the whole city takes on a different character after dark.
The best way to see it is a boat tour — smaller canal boats weave between installations at water level, giving you angles you simply can't get from the bridges. Walking routes also exist if you prefer to go at your own pace, but the boat is worth the extra cost.

Dam Square and Westerkerk are popular gathering points. The atmosphere is electric and anarchic. Hotels cost 2–3× the usual rate on Dec 31 — book months ahead. Restaurants fill up; book dinner before you arrive.

Enjoyable rather than spectacular — if you want the classic Christmas market experience, Maastricht or Bruges (day trip) does it better.

The early sunset is actually an advantage for the Light Festival — it's dark by 4:30pm, which means you can do the boat tour straight after a late lunch rather than waiting until 9pm. Embrace the darkness rather than fighting it.
Rain in Amsterdam tends to be drizzle rather than heavy downpours. A good waterproof coat handles it. An umbrella is less useful in wind — waterproof layers work better. The cold is manageable with proper clothing; it rarely drops below -3°C.
The most central option, right in front of the Rijksmuseum. Ice rink, wooden market stalls, mulled wine and oliebollen. Gets busy on weekends but is genuinely pleasant on a weekday afternoon. The Rijksmuseum lit up behind it makes for a good photo.
More alternative and arts-focused than the Museumplein market. Quirky performances, local food stalls, live music in a repurposed gasworks. Popular with locals. Less touristy than the centre options and a good excuse to visit the Westerpark neighbourhood.
A smaller market on houseboats moored along the Amstel. Very photogenic and unique to Amsterdam — you won't find this format in most European cities. Best visited in the afternoon when the light hits the water. A short walk from Waterlooplein.
If you're serious about Christmas markets, Bruges (2.5 hrs by train) and Maastricht (2.5 hrs) both have exceptional ones that make Amsterdam's look modest. Either makes a brilliant December day trip from Amsterdam.

In December you book a timed slot and walk straight in. The experience is simply better. Book timed entry in advance regardless — the museums don't take walk-ups reliably.

Amsterdam's brown cafés (bruine kroegen) are named for their tobacco-stained walls and centuries of character. In December they're exactly what you want: warm, dimly lit, serving Heineken or jenever (Dutch gin), with small plates of bitterballen on the side. Hoppe on Spui, In de Wildeman near Centraal, and Café Papeneiland in Jordaan are all worth the detour.
If you can't get a boat tour or prefer your own pace, the official walking route covers the same installations over about 2.5km through the canal ring. Download the map from the festival website. Best done starting around 5pm once it's fully dark.

The nine small streets crossing the Jordaan canal ring are at their best in December. Independent boutiques, vintage clothing, cheese shops, and specialist bookstores, all decorated and unhurried. Far better Christmas shopping than the tourist-trap market stalls.
The same neighbourhood logic applies in December: Jordaan for atmosphere and quiet nights, De Pijp for value and excellent restaurants, Oud-West for Vondelpark proximity. Avoid Centrum — it's slightly better in winter than summer (less noise) but still overpriced.
One December-specific note: for the Light Festival, staying in the canal ring area (Jordaan, Centrum canal side) puts you in the middle of the installations. You can walk them from your hotel door after dinner.
